Since the release of her viral first single “Escalate”, the music of Belgian gal Tsar B, who counts Grimes, FKA twigs, Rihanna and Banks among her influences, has spread like lightning among fans of contemporary, R&B-tinged electronic pop. A mere month after the release of her eagerly anticipated debut album, the musician, hailed by critics as “ecstasy for the senses”, will stop at Šiška. Ahead of her show, Czech synthwave rascal Zagami Jericho will introduce us to one of the freshest sounds right now.
Not only did Justine Bourgeus aka Tsar B draw attention to herself with her first single “Escalate – no, she grabbed the gaze of the music industry with both hands and hasn’t let go since. Following in the footsteps of FKA twigs, Sevdaliza and Alma, her catchy electronic spin on progressive European R&B is distinguished by an emphasis on DIY ethics from her home studio to scouting video shoot locations, as well as at times thrillingly dark lyricism.
Even before releasing an album, her clear voice and excellent songs won over media such as NME, Drowned in Sound, Noisey, Billboard, BBC Radio 1, The Fader and i-D Magazine. She also captured the admiration of professional dancers – the dance performance video for “Escalate”, choreographed by noted dancer Alexander Chung, exploded online with over 22 million view, making her a household name on dancefloors all over the world.
Just one month after her heavily anticipated debut album The Games I Played drops, this promising musician will pay a visit to Šiška. Considering she is well on her way across the pond, it pays to catch her live in an intimate club instead of a stadium spectacle. Time’s running out fast.
We’ll start the evening with a performance by rising Prague-based musician Zagami Jericho, a mere 19 years old, who founded her music expression in synthwave aesthetics along the lines of Perturbator and Carpenter Brut, with a hint of Japanese quirkiness. Her production and vocal skills have established her as one of the most promising Czech acts according to the Czeching project, and she’s performed at renowned festivals such as Eurosonic Noorderslag, Pohoda and Colours of Ostrava.
