The exhibition Shards presents the comic book debut of the same name, in which the young illustrator and comics artist Neža Šivec drew on her many years of experience working with the homeless.
Shards opens up many pressing social issues, such as violence, poverty, addiction and homelessness, revealing the often overlooked and invisible aspects of modern society through fragments of stories and lives. The exhibition presents the process of creating the comic book, from quick charcoal sketches, drawings and portraits of homeless people from the streets of Ljubljana to the final comic book pages.
Neža Šivec (1996) completed her master’s degree in illustration at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2021 with a thesis on comics under the mentorship of Milan Erič and Damijan Stepančič. As a student, she participated in several group exhibitions. Her comic book debut Shards (Črepinje) was born out of a desire to break stereotypes and prejudices about homelessness, as she believes that through comics, readers can immerse themselves intensely in someone else’s world, and empathy is the first step to breaking any stigma.
