ARTIST PER MONTH / Jurij Hartman: Breeze

exhibition

free entry

The Breeze series of paintings presented at the exhibition are designed to simulate printed images that serve as references for the artwork.

Each painting is created using a single layer of oil on canvas, a technique that demands high precision and mastery, as it leaves no room for error or correction. This approach introduces a playful exploration of imperfection; the artist intentionally incorporates “mistakes” into the works, derived from printed reference material or added during the planning phase. These incongruities become focal points, subtly transcending aesthetics to introduce deeper concepts within seemingly simple images.

At first glance, the paintings appear light and aesthetically pleasing, with flat imagery that suggests superficial simplicity. Closer inspection, however, reveals subtle details that convey layered meanings. These purposefully placed “mistakes” serve as a device with which the artist challenges the viewer’s attention, subverting the impression of mechanical perfection. Through the Breeze series, the artist examines the interplay between aesthetics and concept, where an ostensibly flawless image is revealed, through meticulous details, as a deliberate dialogue between perfection and imperfection.

Jurij Hartman (2002) is a Slovenian interdisciplinary visual artist based in Ljubljana and Škofja Loka. He began his artistic education at the High School of Design and Photography in Ljubljana, studying graphic design from 2017 to 2021. He then continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, initially focusing on video animation and new media before switching to painting. Currently, he is completing his undergraduate studies, which he began in 2021. Hartman’s practice integrates interdisciplinary knowledge across painting, graphic design, installation, and multimedia production, underpinned by a strong interest in cultural analysis, media theory, and semiotics. He has exhibited widely in group shows across Slovenia and Austria, and has held solo exhibitions at the Bank of Slovenia Mala Galerija gallery and Odprto Obrobje Gallery. Upcoming solo exhibitions will be held at the Glass Atrium of Ljubljana Town Hall and the House of Culture in Pivka.
