ARTIST PER MONTH I Markus Röder: Further notes on fiction

exhibition

In his exhibition ‘Further notes on fiction’, Markus Röder revisits his extensive photographic archive and explores the notion of fiction through his works.

He has always been fascinated by photography’s ability to create fiction without intervening in given situations. As an unaltered fragment of reality, a motif can create space for fiction, if only because of the lack of context. The exploration of this quality has been a driving force in his photographic journey.

What exactly leads to the emergence of a particular feeling when observing a photograph and what are our individual projections of memories and stories onto it? We should engage with these questions, explore them intuitively, observe not only the subject and its context, but also details such as materiality and light, and see where our imagination leads us. What draws the artist to fiction is the urge to experience novelty beyond everyday routines, the playful element of exploration, the challenge of understanding a foreign environment and the opportunity to temporarily escape a society whose values he often disagrees with.

With his solo exhibition Further notes on fiction, the artist concludes his residency as part of the Open Studio programme.

Markus Röder (1993, Aschaffenburg) is a German artist who works predominantly with the medium of photography. He completed his M.A. in Photography and is currently pursuing a PhD in Fine Art Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Ljubljana. His works often deal with the notions of fiction and belonging. In the framework of the Open Studio residency at the DobraVaga Gallery he will be dealing with his extensive photographic archive.
