In the series Flowers, artist Petja Kocet applies charcoal to canvas to question both the possibilities of drawing and our ideas about it, using minimal means. Throughout the history of art, depictions of flowers are omnipresent and manifold, but by avoiding colours and focusing on the play of light and shapes, which holds and directs the viewer’s gaze, Kocet approaches the motif in a distinctly fresh, contemporary way.
At the same time, the artist opens up new interpretations within the familiar image set, encouraging a thematically open, almost contemplative approach to the works.
Petja Kocet (1998) is active in the fields of painting, graphic art and photography. In 2021, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana, majoring in painting, under Associate Professor Ksenija Čerče. He is a recipient of the ALUO Award. In 2022, he held his first solo exhibition Freightline1 at the cultural centre Libertas in Koper, and in 2023, in tandem with David Kucler, he held the solo exhibition Meadow at Kino Šiška. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in painting at ALUO, and lives and works in Ljubljana.
