As part of a new international residency program in Ljubljana this October, André Derainne, a rising young French comics artist, is currently creating new work.
He has released two comic albums so far. His debut, Un orage par jour (A Storm a Day), was produced during a two-month residency in Ho Chi Minh City, which coincided with the rainy season. In the comic, Derainne reflects on daily walks under stormy skies and shares his personal experiences of this Vietnamese city. In Des fourmis dans les jambes (Pins and Needles in the Legs), he explores the geometry and atmosphere of a large airport, where two different travel stories unfold.
His works are characterized by a refined sensitivity to the language of colors and an apparent calmness that coexists with almost surreal scenes of wonderfully imaginative, but at the same time strangely alien worlds. In addition to a set of original pages from both comics, the exhibition also presents a series of travel sketchbooks with watercolor studies.
André Derainne (born 1994) is a comics artist, illustrator, and graphic designer from Strasbourg. He has published several zines and is the author of two independent comic albums. His illustrations have appeared in magazines and newspapers such as The New Yorker, Libération, The New York Times, and Die Zeit. As an author, he also contributed to the animated film Les Belles Cicatrices (Scars We Love) by Raphaël Jouzeau, which was featured in the official program of the Cannes Film Festival.
