One of the most prominent figures of the US independent music scene for the past two decades and cult leader of the former desert-based folk-rock cavalry 16 Horsepower, David Eugene Edwards is returning to Ljubljana with his band Wovenhand after six years! Released last year, their excellent seventh album “Refractory Obdurate”, combining old-style American music legacy and alternative sounds as well as displaying the band’s gospel, bluegrass, rock and punk stance, is considered by far their strongest apocalyptic and biblical acoustic performance, which they are going to present live in CUK Kino Šiška within their European Tour on 22 April.
Edwards had reawakened Wovenhand in 2001 following the disintegration of the legendary 16 Horsepower. With both bands, his highly profiled work inadvertently influenced and fascinated his audiences as well as generations of musicians in the sprouting alternative sphere, yet the music of both 16HP and Wovenhand has remained largely unknown to many a label, being transferred among big names, such as Alternative Tentacles, and small and marginal ones, such as the US Jetset and Sounds Family, and the European Glitterhouse. Much to the surprise of many, it eventually rested with Deathwish Inc, run by Jacob Bannon, founder of the label and member of hard-core legends Converge.
The greatest challenge to their music is posed by Edwards’ zealous Christian beliefs, which he expresses through his mystic and religiously marked poetry, uncovering his inner views on the world of human errors and delusions. As can be traced in their albums, his search for the new has been gradually directing Wovenhand away from their original music tradition. This was made obvious in their previous album, “The Laughing Stalk”, produced by the old hand Alexander Hacke (who was then, together with Edwards et al., an accomplice in reawakening Australian post-punk legends Crime And The City Solution).
Owning to their last two albums, the upcoming gig will surely bring the strongest incarnation that has ever existed within the music temple of Wovenhand. Amen!
