This October doubleheader will showcase the creative breadth of Slovenian jazz with some of the most prominent names right now. Under the direction of pianist Rok Zalokar, the Zhlehtet ensemble will present a Ljubljana debut of a new suite for an octet, while the internationally renowned saxophonist Igor Lumpert and his ensemble Innertextures will showcase music from their upcoming new album.

FOR FANS OF: Keith Jarrett, Jazz Cerkno, Charles Mingus…

Zhlehtet is a musical collective of respected local musicians, led by pianist and composer Roko Zalokar, well known to us from the Piano Day celebrations, Impronedeljek jams and various other events. The collective performs in various formats and combines elements of acoustic and electronic music, remaining faithful to the message of the moment and mutual understanding by staying rooted in the tradition of spiritual jazz and early electronica. Past releases such as Portals Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 received the approval of media such as Mladina and Radio Študent, and the band has also impressed live, e.g. at this year’s Jazz Cerkno festival.

On their first visit to Šiška, Zhlehtet will bring along with all active members and debut a new suite for an octet in front of the home audience. Penned by Zalokar, the suite unveils the collective in orchestral colours and as a well-coordinated ensemble that constantly creates new works and erases the boundaries between improvisation and composition.

Slovenian saxophonist and composer Igor Lumpert, based in New York, will present his vision of jazz music on his return to Šiška with top musicians – guitarist Jeff Miles, saxophonist Greg Ward and drummer Kenny Grohowski. For Lumpert, it is precisely live performance that plays a key role in ensuring originality, and the eclectic sound expression intertwines the musical, personal and cross-cultural experiences of the band members with a wide range of influences, from Eastern European folk bands and African rhythms to chamber music and contemporary jazz. Lumpert’s releases for the Clean Feed label have been praised for their lightness and original funk brilliance, also winning over the likes of Yoko Ono, who called Innertextures simply “a great band!”

At the upcoming show, Lumpert and Innertextures will present material from a new record that will be released next year. The new music has only been played live once so far, in New York, so it’s a truly unique opportunity on home soil.
