The Romanian band Zimbru, who enchanted us at last year’s MENT with a convincing electronic-analogue fusion of art rock and electro pop, is returning to Ljubljana. They’ll be joined by promising local band Đoko, who are quickly taking over the radio waves with songs like “Blok 22”.
Romanian quartet Zimbru tell stories of dancing, lost pets, queer love and nostalgia for never-experienced decades past with their wild mix of raspy synths, angular riffs and lively percussion. Formed in 2019, the band immediately made a strong impression with their first single, “Divination”, which quickly became a fixture on Romanien radio waves and paved the way for the band to play at all the major festivals there – before one of their biggest performances, at the Electric Circle festival, even the famed British NME emphasised them as one of the highlights to see.
The band’s EP debut Little Creatures continued their success and led Zimbra to referential international festivals around Europe, such as MENT Ljubljana, EXIT and Sziget. Last year, the band also received the HEMI Music Award in fierce competition, which, among other things, won them a performance at this year’s Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. They return to Ljubljana full of new experiences.
The synth pop band Đoko from Maribor complements its rosy sound with melodic synths, electronic drums, melancholic lyrics and guitars, and draws inspiration from the new wave of the 1980s and 1990s. With singles such as “Puli” and “Blok 22”, they quickly grew their circle of listeners – “Blok 22” was also voted the song of the week on Val 202. Following their first live shows, they’re now focusing on their upcoming debut album, and will play songs off it in March at Šiška as well.
