Brackish Times emerged from an intensive month of research in Catania and its surroundings during an artistic residency at Salmastra, a cultural association dedicated to urban regeneration.
At the end of the ten-day residency, the artists published and distributed a daily newspaper in the small port of San Giovanni Li Cuti, inhabited by fishermen, children, and beachgoers. Rooted in the specific context of this small Sicilian harbour and its (imaginary) fauna, the publication also weaves together insights from art, literature, and philosophy, positioning itself within the interdisciplinary and evolving field of blue humanities.
Eszter Koncz is a Hungarian interdisciplinary artist who observes, maps, and makes objects with a strong visual focus, while Kirstine Hupfeldt Nielsen is a Danish artist working across various media in the documentary field. The two met while pursuing an MA in Devised and Object Theatre in Prague. As passionate collectors of objects and gatherers of stories, they weave these fragments into new narratives.
