The work Modern Woman (created under the mentorship of Matej Stupica at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design) is a collaborative project by visual communication designers Hana Besjedica and Hana Jelovšek. It intertwines illustrations, design, and poetry in the form of an artist’s book. Modern Woman arose from the collaboration of these two female artists, both seeking a shared design expression.
The work, combining poetry and design, was developed through the collection of material that influenced Besjedica during her writing process, while Jelovšek used the overprint technique to create unique illustrations that enrich the poetry collection. Through Besjedica’s poems, a stream of thoughts unfolds—reflecting the unconscious and, above all, everything that impacted her when she felt insufficient. The poems convey bitterness and hysteria in a world with unrealistic expectations.
As poetry is often dual in nature, so too is the design. Different-sized formats of poetry are occasionally interrupted by A4 kitsch statements like APOCALYPSE, IT HAPPENS, and FIREWORKS, which Besjedica adopts as her life mottos. There is no lack of stickers, hot pink, and dead fish, either.
