ZINE VITRINE I Hannah Koselj Marušič: I NEED TO PEE!

exhibition

The artistic activist project I NEED TO PEE! (LULAT ME!) has been drawing attention to the issue of gender inequality in public space for several years. It was first unveiled as part of the TAM-TAM Street Gallery, in the post-coronavirus era, when city life came to a standstill and the doors of public toilets closed.

Today, the project continues to develop in the form of the Instagram profile @__lulat_me__, which serves as a platform to destigmatize female public urination. Now, the author is presenting the posts, anonymous contributions and stories from the profile in the form of a zine. The double standard between a man who urinates in public and a woman who does the same is evident in the rude, fetishistic or outraged comments under many of the posts. The project thus puts the position of inequality under scrutiny: although it is a larger, systemic and societal problem, women feel its consequences firsthand in the most everyday situations and when performing the most natural functions.

Hannah Koselj Marušič (1996) is an interdisciplinary artist, poet and filmmaker. She graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts and is currently a master’s student in Video, Animation and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana. In her research and interdisciplinary art projects, poetry and films, she intertwines personal experiences with diverse socio-political topics such as abandoned buildings, gender equality, women’s rights, childhood trauma, difficult life situations and mental health. Combining the deeply personal with the universally relevant is the foundation of her creative expression. At the core of her artistic vision lies a commitment to exploring personal growth through difficult life experiences, which become a catalyst for the transformation of her personal experience into universal stories of strength and growth. She strives to make her art a platform for honest confessions, transparent vulnerability, and exploration of the transformative power of suffering that characterizes every human experience.
