ZINE VITRINE: Jernej Čuček Gerbec: Chai

exhibition

With its simple form, colors and materials, the zine Chai focuses on the experience of drinking masala chai and one’s associations to it, to the ritual of drinking tea or simply observing one’s own leisure at a moment of relaxation. Instead of words and pictures, the tea itself takes the central role, creating abstract shapes and a unique rhythm with the help of traces and subtle splotches.

Each zine thus fascinates and attracts with its unique content, which is unencumbered and self-sufficient in its simplicity. Every bit of the zine has been given care, with careful selection of materials, covers that have been hand-dyed with actual tea, a title that has been printed letter by letter, and each copy has been stitched by hand.

Jernej Čuček Gerbec (1985) has a master’s degree in visual culture and contemporary art at Aalto University. He has exhibited his works in Finland, Slovenia, the USA and the United Kingdom. In 2023, he completed a three-month residency at MeetFactory in Prague. Jernej’s work is not based on a chosen medium or concept, but on observation. Observation of the usual, the conventional and the general. He sees artistic subtleties in everyday life, ordinary conversations and photographs of passers-by, and recognizes lyricism in the core of everyday life. The result of such observation is not simply a document of the latter, but is expressed in the form of an installation, photograph, video, text or sculpture. In his works, the artist tries to shed light on what escapes us, unnoticed, and at the same time preserve the ambiguity and uncertainty of the original.
