“SpranGPT is a parody of artificially generated drawings, where two artists take on the role of ‘natural unintelligence’ and create artworks in real time based on suggestions from the audience. Instead of algorithmically soulless images, participants receive ‘trashy’ drawings filled with peculiar details and obvious mistakes, such as hands with six fingers, nonsensical proportions, and bizarre combinations of elements.” – ChatGPT
The SpranGPT zine humorously showcases the creative mind of “natural unintelligence.” The drawings in it were created during a workshop of the same name, led by the two artists as part of the Koper-based Spranfest festival. In addition to the artists’ “generated” drawings, the zine includes suggestions or “prompts” provided by the workshop participants. Its cover features a photo of the “computer” – a cardboard box that separated the artists from the participants. Through a slot in the “computer,” participants submitted prompts for generating drawings, as the artists attempted to simulate the workings of actual artificial intelligence.
In the Zine Vitrine exhibition, the artists reverse the roles. This time, the “natural unintelligence” is represented by the audience, who are provided with prompts to generate their own drawings. With this approach, the artists maintain the interactive spirit of the workshop and recreate the atmosphere in which the original drawings were conceived.
