The exhibition Secants is based on the innovative zine Unobserved Lines, which originally consisted of a large cardboard on which black tea-toned traces of photographed electrical wiring were depicted. When the zine was spread out, the interweaving of numerous geometric grids, lines and stripes functioned as a mysterious monochrome labyrinth or a map of secret aerial connections.
With depictions of at first glance abstract networks and overlapping plans, the artist relates to aerial electrical installations in urban environments, which represent an imperceptible noise or a contemptible aesthetic obstacle to the average local. The omnipresent electromagnetic wire acts as a starting point for a reminder of the spatially invasive structures that are no longer noticed, are skilfully ignored or are forgotten on the fly. The prints in a complex combination of different techniques and cyanotype remain unrepeatable one-ofs and include collaging transparencies on cotton paper, bleaching the dry cyanotype and toning it in black tea, which contains the active tannin compound. The whole is still based on photographs taken on black-and-white negative film.
Tim Topić (2002) is a creator who works primarily in the fields of graphic design and photography. He is currently studying graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana. Photography and design skilfully intertwine, support and complement each other in his work, but still function as independent entities. Thematically, Topić addresses the relationship between external and internal experience, among other things in terms of manipulative cognitive spaces (and their materializations) and the construct of abstract and sensory memory. He composes fictitious narratives and ambient constructions from documentary and directed material. Visually, he identifies with neo-expressionism and neo-impressionism, offset by a good dose of Swiss design styles of the 20th century, and the combination of the above often results in (subtle) grotesque. Technically, he uses analog photography and alternative photographic and traditional design (printing) processes, and thus explores their place in the age of new media. He has participated in several group exhibitions, most recently “Human#Animal” at the Natural History Museum of Slovenia (2022). Together with the collective Bastardi, they presented their multimedia concept “We Are Looking for a Collective Father” at the Kavadarci City Gallery in North Macedonia (2022). He also successfully participated in the 15th Plaktivat competition, where his poster series “The Intimate Anonymity of Blood Donation” received a special mention from the jury in the Fresh Blood category (2022).
