Selection committee explanation:
FURTIVO vol. III, Carolina De Matthaeis, 2022
The zine FURTIVO vol. III is a collection of black-and-white analog photographs taken by the author while spending time with friends in hidden parts of Ljubljana and other local autonomous spaces across Slovenia. It illustrates an insight into the local skater culture and the spaces that united and strengthened the community, the author’s memories, moments from her travels and hanging out with friends. Furtivo, which means “hidden” in Spanish, very honestly reveals a fragment of a period of life, seemingly representing an homage to spaces that no longer exist. The zine is distinguished by a carefully selected type of paper, diverse photo formats and interesting, artistically appropriate framing that matches the content; from shots of concerts and city scenes to debauched parties and amateur construction projects. The thoughtfully arranged photographs are interspersed with unique artistic interventions – drawings, monotypes and a painted cover, which connect the zine into a dynamic whole.
